How To Help Preserve Water Quality
KLWA encourages you to become an active contributor for the benefit of our lake. Here are some options:
Familiarize yourself with the principles of Lake Shore Stewardship as outlined on the Maine Lake Society’s website. KLWA is eager to join Lakesmart but needs more volunteers to spearhead this effort. Give us a call or email us!
Become familiar with water quality measurement methods and techniques by joining Lake Stewards of Maine and becoming a certified Lake Monitor. Currently we need certified monitors for Farrington, Heald, and Bradley Ponds.
If you don’t have time for any of these activities, take the time to look at KLWA’s “Lake Dweller’s Handbook” and follow our suggestions. You will become aware of many changes – small and large - from letting the grass grow longer to picking up dog poop and keeping your septic system good shape. You will learn about Non-Point Source (NPS) pollution which is probably the most serious threat to our lakes and one that homeowners can make a difference in.
Be mindful of boat wakes, keeping large wakes from activities such as tubing at least 500 feet from shore, and at least 20 feet deep to avoid erosion and damage to fragile water’s edge ecosystems. Please see our poster Be Wakewise for more information, and share it with others.
And don’t forget: KLWA is a member supported non-profit organization. Our programs require instruments, consultants and expert advise. You monetary contributions are always welcome.
